How do I price my products and services?TutorialSelecting a price for your products and services should be an easy task. You can simply see what the market will stand and put your price there. Or maybe you should offer your products and services at the best price currently available. Or maybe you should see what others are charging and charge the same. In a perfect world, pricing would be easy but those in business for themselves today know that this is not a perfect world. So how do you get an accurate price for products and services? Unfortunately, it requires time for research – a commodity that many business owners know is often more precious than money. Start by checking out the competition. Even if you’re new to a particular business, you probably have some idea of what others in the field are charging. Maintain a business budget. If you are serving hamburgers and the price of buns jumps drastically, do you need to raise your prices? You won’t be in business long if you aren’t making a profit from each burger you sell. At the same time, you should probably be able to weather most temporary price increases without passing that cost on to your customers. If patrons never know from one day to the next how much they’ll pay for a hamburger at your establishment, they won’t be nearly as likely to return more than a few times. In some cases, you’ll fix prices and they’ll likely remain fairly constant over a period of time. While it’s tempting to ignore what’s going on around you, stay alert to price changes in your field. Even if your price remains the same, the market fluctuations could mean that you are significantly higher or lower than you should be and neither extreme is good for business. Remember that you aren’t always going to manage to get the prices right. You’ll likely lose money at least now and then because you priced your products and services too high or too low. Research must be ongoing. Stay on top of what the competition is doing and how consumers are reacting. by Wendy Ledbetter on Thursday, June 16, 2005
