The most frequent way to find an attorney is by referral. A friend or associate refers you to his attorney or to an attorney he knows. Typically, it is best to stay away from the large law firms in town - their bill rates are typically too high for most families and they have a tendency to focus on business law. You can find some very good local attorneys or ones in small to medium size firms to help you with general family issues.

You can also find a good lawyer by calling your local chamber of commerce and requesting a referral. They will generally know the better and more ethical attorneys.

You can also call the state bar association, though you will receive a referral without any conditions attached to it - they won't tell you the good lawyers or the ethical ones, they will just refer whomever they have in their book which performs the tasks you are looking for in an attorney.
