Tutorial

Jewish people have a unique culture. The Jewish culture is full of holidays that many people have never heard about. The most basic of their holidays date all the way back to biblical times. Some were added later.

Some holidays most people have at least heard of. Hanukkah, for example is celebrated around the time that many families celebrate Christmas. It is the festival of rededication that lasts for eight days. People who observe this holiday have a holder for eight candles. One candle is lit for every night of the holiday. There are certain rituals that are associated with this holiday. The holiday is looked at as a symbol of the survival of Jews against the odds.

The Jewish version of the New Year is also pretty well known. It is called Rosh Hashanah. This holiday marks the start of the ten days of penitence, which is called Yom Kippur. At the end of this fast comes the Day of Atonement. On this day, observers can not work and are to cleanse themselves of sin.

Jewish holidays include days for great celebration and for grave remembrance. Yom Ha’atzmaut is the Israel Independence day, and is a public holiday in Israel. It is a fun and joyous occasion. Then there is the Yom HaShoah. This is the holocaust memorial day.

The Jewish culture is very diverse. You can learn more about Jewish holidays online, at your local library, or from a primary source. It will be worth your time to understand another culture.
