Preparing for a Job Interview

Preparing for a job interview is vital to getting the job. Learn ways to impress from first sight.

Tutorial

When you have a job interview, don’t go into it blind. Be prepared. Interviewing, for most companies, is the main way of selecting employees. There are many reasons that you should prepare for a job interview, but first you must know how to prepare.

Do your research. You can really make an impression on interviewers if you already know something about that company. Of course, you don’t have to flaunt that you researched. Just try to casually mention something that you have read. You can use this information as reasons why you would want to work here, or simply ask a question. Either way, you prove that you are serious about the job.

Next, pay close attention to your wardrobe. Dress professionally if it is a professional position. Remember that your appearance reflects a lot about you, and interviewers are likely to judge you based on it. Remember that people have biases and you shouldn’t give any interviewer a chance to base their decisions on them. For example, if you have facial hair, tattoos, like to dress less than conservatively, or are a male with an earring, people may judge you for these things and more. Most everyone knows that these things won’t affect your ability to do most jobs well, but most are still bias to some things. A good interviewer will try to recognize their biases and try to put them aside, but they are human too. Sometimes biases are even subconscious.

Don’t neglect your resume. This is the first insight that potential employers have into what kind of worker you will be. If you need help with this step, you can go to your school for workshops. Other places offer them, and there are even help sites online.

Going to a job interview unprepared is like trying out for a sports team before you know the rules of the game. You will get run over and rejected if you do this, so be prepared.
