Get Your Foot in the Door

Getting your foot in the door is the most difficult part of entering the IT industry. How do you show you have the knowledge necessary?

Get Certified

Certification is a great first step to showing you have the knowledge necessary to succeed in a PC Support career. The CompTIA A+ certification is a great first certification for technicians starting out.

Contracting

Another option is to work with a contracting firm. Contracting firms provide work for you at customer companies as it is available. Though some have successful careers as contractors, some find it difficult not knowing where your next job will be or if you will be employed from week to week.

Networking

Not computer networking  - people networking. Join user groups, take classes, or schmooze with your current company's IT manager. A big percentage of jobs are found through people you know. I know about half the technicians I hired came from contracting firms and the other half came from referrals.

Get a Degree

If you haven't finished your degree yet, completing an MIS degree can only help you enter a long career in the IT industry.
