How can I reward employees?TutorialOne of the first rules in retaining competent employees is reward good performance. Good performance that leads to rewards is believed to lead to performance. Good performance that doesn’t lead to rewards is not usually linked to good performance, but low moral. If employees do their very best and are never recognized for this, they will feel unappreciated. It is important to retain your employees so that you won’t have to spend more money and time recruiting, training, and more. When most people think about rewarding their employees, money is the first thing they think about. Money is essential, because if employees feel underpaid, they will never be happy with their jobs. However, there are other ways of compensating good work. Many forms of compensation will cost little if any money. Some companies have been using stock options as a form of compensation. This can be effective and has other benefits as well. This form of compensation can promote employee loyalty. If employees own a piece of the company, they are likely to want it to excel. To reward employees without using a lot of money, simply acknowledge their work. This is very common with companies in the form of naming an employee of the month. You don’t even have to be formal when you acknowledge performance, but do recognize it. Whether it’s a pat on the back, paid vacation, or a pay raise, rewards are a necessary part of keeping good employee relations. by Wendy Ledbetter on Tuesday, June 21, 2005
