Retaining Good Employees

Retaining good employees is essential in building a great team.

Tutorial

Good employees are essential to building great teams and helping you become a successful manager.

Reward Your Top Performers

The most common and easiest way to retain good employees is to reward your top performers. Provide the top performers with the top raises and motivate them to stay with salary.

You can also reward your top performers with non-monetary rewards - tickers to sporting events, public recognition, time off, or flexible schedules are common methods.

Promote Your Top Performers

You can also retain employees by promoting them to new positions. If you are unable to promote your top employees, just providing them with additional responsibility will motivate most to remain. There have been countless times that I can just assign a new project to an employee and that provides them confidence and a new challenge.

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Sometimes you have an employee who is just overqualified for their position and you need to be prepared to let them go. If you can't promote them or reward them, sometimes you just have to let them go. As a manager, you should always want your employees to succeed and should help them succeed whether or not it is with your team.
