How to Understand Organizational Behavioral TheoryTutorialOrganizational Behavioral Theory is basically a method of evaluating and understanding the actions and reactions of people (both as individuals and as an organized group) within an organization. The theory as a whole is very complex and requires significant time and training to fully grasp. However, having a basic understanding of the kinds of things that affect how people act and react within an organization will help you become a better manager, leader and negotiator. There are a myriad of factors that make all the difference in how a person acts or reacts in a particular situation. While individual personalities are important, the person’s role within the company is often just as likely to dictate a certain action. While the management’s attitudes may seem separate from those of the staff, it’s actually an important part of the overall organizational behavioral theory model. The actions and attitudes of those in the higher offices of an organization will greatly affect the actions and attitudes of those in the lower positions. The overall environment – whether it’s the formal organization or the social organization naturally formed when several people work together – will also impact how people act and react. Other important pieces of the organizational behavioral theory model include the communication within the organization, the dynamics of those individuals who work there, the leadership (or lack of) and the overall satisfaction of employees, managers and owners. Fully understanding organizational behavioral theory will take time and dedication but the results are likely to be evident in increased satisfaction for all concerned. by Wendy Ledbetter on Thursday, June 16, 2005
