Finding Angel InvestorsTutorialAngel investor is a term used to generally describe a person willing to invest a portion of their own money in a fledgling company. If you consider the people who seek out this type of funding and the people who offer up this kind of funding, it’s easy to see that the name is symbolic of an “angel” helping out a worth cause. Those who look for angel investors are typically young entrepreneurs who have a good idea and need only a little capital to get their business going. The angel investors themselves are usually people with limited cash to invest but who see the potential rewards (tangible and intangible) that come from helping a young business get off the ground. There are several major angel investors groups that provide a good starting place when seeking angle investors. Outside those groups, don’t overlook the potential angel investor from your own network of friends, business associates and family. The ideal angel investors will be very interested in the business or similar businesses and will understand the potential for success for the young business seeking financing. Remember that the angel investor is using his or her own money to finance this endeavor. Sometimes, groups of angel investors lump money together to increase the potential aid they can offer to a business while lessening the risks of any single investor. Typically, the amount of financing needed is relatively small and you may very well find the perfect angel investor among people you know. Before you approach an angel investor, get your plan organized. If you’re already doing business, produce documentation of your success to date. Create a business plan to show that you plan for the growth of your business. And remember that an angel investor could very well leave his or her money in a bank account to draw interest – investing will have to seem like a safe, smart thing to do. by Wendy Ledbetter on Thursday, June 16, 2005
