Selling yourself as a leader

Managers need to be leaders in order to do their jobs well. If you are not a natural born leader, you must learn to sell yourself as one

Not everyone is a natural born leader. Some people don’t even want to be a leader. However, it is to your advantage if you want to manage people, to be a leader. No effective manager was ever a follower. Good leaders have the ability to make people want to fall into step behind them. Good managers have the qualities of leaders plus good business sense and the will to steer people in the right directions. In order to actually lead people, you have to make people believe that you are a competent leader.

Even if you aren’t a natural born leader, you can emulate qualities that most leaders possess. First of all, you should learn as much as you can about managing, and about the industry and company that you are a manager in. If you want to convince people to follow you, you should understand how most people think and what they want. You also should know about your business, because no one will follow you if they don’t think that you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not the same as being bossy. True leaders have followers who follow only because they want to. A lot of it has to do with personality. You should try to be a people person when selling yourself as a leader.
