Finding a mentor

How to find a mentor

Tutorial

Mentors can be the key to unlocking a network of business contacts and to spread word of mouth that your business is up and running and ready to perform for customers. Mentors can also provide knowledge, expertise, and support for your business.

Whether you are starting a small business or working your way up the corporate ladder, a mentor can open doors for you and ease your way to customers and career success. In many ways, a mentor can be just what you need to break into a career. But how to find a mentor?

Tips on how to find a mentor include:
● Make yourself stand out. Work harder than anyone else around you so that you are positioned as a winner. Being seen as an up-and-comer will attract a mentor.
● Approach someone who has done what you want to do. Be bold. Ask them if you can help them in some small ways to gain their trust. They may allow you to observe their work, invite you to lunch, or assist them. As you build a relationship, they will begin to do more and more for you because they become vested in your success.
● Dress for success and project a positive attitude at all times. You never know when an opportunity might arise. Your favorite comfy sweat suit will not attract anyone but your cat.
● Check with you local Small Business Administration (SBA) office, other business development offices, or chamber of commerce to see if they have a mentoring program for individuals or for businesses.
● Join a group for professionals such as Toastmasters or your local Chamber of Commerce to increase your chances of finding a mentor.
