How do I research a potential market to start a business in?

If you’re looking for a potential market to start a business in, you may find that there are more viable options available than you thought. You can create a “short list” of potential businesses by doing some research.

Tutorial

If you’ve decided that you want to be in business and you have a few potential markets that you’re interested in, researching the ins and outs of those markets can help you make an informed final decision.

Start by talking to others in the same or similar markets.

While you may find some resentment from business owners who don’t want the competition, you can probably find at least some business owners who will offer some good advice and accurate insights. While this may not be technical information, you may get some pieces of information that steer you toward or away from a particular kind of business.

Trade journals are another good way to get information.

If you take the time to read the publications aimed at business owners in a particular market, you can get a good feel how the market truly works. While there may be technical articles that you don’t understand, read for general understanding.

There are many public records that can help you determine whether a particular business is lucrative. Real estate transactions are filed at the courthouse of the county the property is in and you can find the actual transaction amount for a particular business. Sales tax records are also typically public record and can give you information about actual sales reported during a particular period of time.
