Finding a Talent AgentTutorialYou think you have a marketable talent and you’re ready to see if you can make a living at it. You can always enter your chosen field as on a freelance basis, but having a talent agent can have some important benefits. This agent may be able to open doors to you that would not open on your own. Just as importantly, an agent can often steer your career in several ways. He or she might be able to help you with contracts and financial issues, and can help you choose the jobs you should take to further your career (and those you should avoid as being potentially detrimental to your career). So how do you find a good talent agent? Start with people you knowIf you’re this far into the field, you probably know people who have talent agents. Ask for recommendations. Those already in the business you are hoping to break into probably have heard rumors and stories that will guide you toward good agents and steer you away from those who are less than reputable. Read the trade journalsMost fields of this kind have listings of agents available along with what their specialties are. You can find someone with experience in your particular talent who is well-suited to help your career along. Get acquaintedSpend a little time with an agent you are considering. You may find that this person is a great talent agent but that you expect personality conflicts. While your career is important, don’t tie yourself to an agent that will not also be personally supportive. Ask for referencesWhile the talent agent is only going to give you the names of people who present positive references, it will give you some insight into the personality of the agent and may even tip you off to potential problems.
