How do I find a business consultant?TutorialThere are many levels of business consultant. There are the Andersen Consulting and Ernst & Young kind, which deal in hundreds of thousands of dollars and Fortune 1000 companies. Then there are the consultants that the rest of us use!
Using an outside consultant can be a very good business decision. They can give you a fresh perspective on your business, based on their knowledge from having worked with a number of other companies. Sometimes we get so mired down in our own world, that we can see what the necessary steps are to fix it, or even to simply improve it.
The trick is finding someone that can help you do this, but that doesn’t need to stay on your staff indefinitely. The best consultants are the ones that will first do an assessment. That is different from a needs analysis, in that a needs analysis is simply them determining what services of theirs you can use. An assessment actually gives you value. The consultant evaluates your organization and gives you recommendations for ways to improve. This report may also note the areas they suggest you fix that they can be of service in completing, but them telling you about the area doesn’t hinge on them getting work out of it.
This assessment stage (which you must pay for, of course) is a way for you to get a feel for the expertise level of the consultant before you hire them to do further work.
A good way to find experienced consultants is to ask for recommendations from the industry trade association in the particular field for which you need a consultant.
