Registering a domain name

Registering a domain name on the Internet.

Tutorial

Registering a domain name is fast and easy on the Internet. Follow these instructions to grab your name today!

1. Select the Registrar for You

Domain names can be registered through companies known as domain name registrars. You have probably heard of several big ones: GoDaddy.com , Register.com, and Network Solutions. There are countless others, you can find a lot of registrars by searching for "register a domain name" on Google.

We use and recommend GoDaddy.com for all of our domain name registrations. They are easy to use, cheap, and have good features (like DNS server management, which you may need later). You can also get your hosting through Go Daddy if you need it.

2. Find Your Name

In the past, you were very limited in the extensions you could use for your domain name. .com, .net, and .org were the only ones available. Now, there are a half dozen or so of name extensions you could use, though .com still remains the most popular. You can use any of the domain name registrars mentioned above to search for an open name. Once you have found the name you want to register, simply follow the process on the site to register the name.

3. Being Creative

If you do not find your companyname.com available, you can be creative in your naming. Try companynameinc.com or mycompanyname.com. These may be available. If you are starting a new company, you may want to think of a new name to match your domain name.
