Short of installing a fence, there are other ways to keep dogs and cats out of your yard or garden.

You could try one of those motion detector water sprayers that attach to your garden hose. This has the added benefit of keeping kids out - until they start thinking its a game.

You could buy spray at a pet store to keep animals out, but this gets expensive.

Bitter apple juice or vinegar works wonders to keep dogs out. Use a spray bottle and spray it around the perimeter of your yard or garden.

If you have problems with animals digging, spread some red chili powder around the area and this should keep most animals from digging. You might end up with a few chile plants as well.

Orange or lemon peels will keep cats out your garden, they hate the citric smell.
