Overcoming burnoutTutorialBurnout. It is just what it sounds like – the total consumption of a particular thing. In this case, it’s probably you. You’ve simply used up the resources you have to offer and you’re no longer able to function well. You may be going through your days in a haze, tired all the time and rarely ready to drag yourself out of bed in the morning to face another day. But there are some things you can do to get past this hurdle, or to avoid it altogether. First, see the signs. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. When you’re physically tired, you need to rest. A good exercise routine, healthy diet and regular sleep patterns can work wonders for your physical health and being healthy can work wonders on your burnout. Probably the most important step to addressing burnout is take some time for yourself. While you may be swamped at work, have tons of responsibilities pressing down and you and think there is no way you can take even a few hours for yourself, you may be surprised at what this tiny effort on your part can accomplish. If your life is all work and responsibility, you’re likely going to lose sight of what you’re working for. Find some time for yourself, even if you have to steal it from some important responsibility. When you return ready to work wonders, you’ll be glad you did. Find something exciting about your day. If you’re tired of facing the same old routine, liven things up a bit. Go somewhere exciting for lunch or treat yourself to an afternoon at the beach, the beauty parlor or the bookstore. Whatever makes you happy, find time for it. When possible, delegate responsibilities. If there’s a particular job that you simply hate, find someone who’s good at it and eliminate that chore from your list of things to do. You may find that making that one change lightens your load considerably. If you’re not faced with that hated task and don’t have to waste time avoiding that chore, other jobs may go more quickly. Finally, find a positive attitude. You’ll be surprised how much difference the simple act of smiling can make. Even though it may be forced, put a smile on your face as you face the day. Share that smile with others who are sure to share it right back. If those who are closest to you all day are smiling, you’re more likely to avoid the burnout in the first place. by Wendy Ledbetter on Wednesday, June 29, 2005
