Why are students required to take general education courses?

By the time you finish your college education, you should be a well-rounded individual who has been exposed to many cultures and ideas. General education rqeuirements help achieve that goal.

Tutorial

One of the biggest complaints of college students, besides the rising tuition cost, is the general education courses. Most colleges make every student pursuing a degree take a certain number of the same, general classes. These classes are required regardless of the student’s major. This of course, generates a substantial amount of grumbling. However, there are real reasons that this is done.

After you are finished with school, you are going to make impressions on a lot of people. Some impressions will be good and some of them bad. And you will often get asked where you went to school. In this way, you will be a reflection on your school. Schools want their graduates to be bright, shining citizens who are a reflection of a brilliant education. Even if you are wonderful at the field of your choosing, if you know nothing else, you will impress only a handful of people. But if you are a well rounded individual, who knows something about a wide array of subjects, you are likely to impress a great many. These are the kind of students that institutes want leaving with their stamp of approval.

So the next time that you are upset because you, a biology major, have to take an arts class, just smile and try to learn something for it. You never know what topics of conversation you will have to try to talk about. And you never know who you might impress with your all-around knowledge.
