How do I create a PR campaign?

A successful PR campaign will bring positive attention to your event, company, individual, product or service. Finding ways to promote your campaign should begin with a budget.

Tutorial

A public relations campaign – or PR campaign – can be a great way to promote a business, person, idea, event, service or product. Launching a PR campaign can seem like a daunting task, but if you break it down it becomes a fun project that can offer up some big rewards.

The first piece of information you need is a budget. You have to know the bottom line amount that you’ll be spending on the campaign and you have to know any restrictions on how the money is to be spent. For example, some funds in political campaigns have limits regarding what you can and cannot spend that money on. After you know how much you have to spend, determine your target audience. Next, start looking at the most cost-effect ways to get your information out to that target.

Identifying your target audience is important because it will impact the kind of PR campaign you set in motion. If members of your audience are all Internet-savvy people who spend significant time online, you’ll find online ads and websites are a good idea. If you have a very local audience, you should look for local ways to attract the desired attention.

Start with advertising, but don’t let your PR campaign turn into an advertising campaign. Consider using live broadcasts from local radio and television stations to promote awareness of your cause. Sales, promotions and other events that cause the public to focus on your campaign are all successful PR ideas.

Finally, if you have the budget and the PR campaign is for a major cause, consider hiring a pro. They’ll likely have an existing relationship with area media and can offer suggestions for making your PR campaign a noteworthy event that media are willing to cover for free.
